My boyfriend is in federal prison. I think they charge $1 for two of the same picture. They're just regular 24mm photos, but geez $150? I'd never spend that much on pictures of myself. What do they do in there - Glam Shots? That's nuts. No way in this world I'm sending $150 for photos.

Your friend was no doubt testing the waters. Photo's cost around the $3 mark at most. As far as scams, no doubt there are those that will try to take advantage of you, their address matters not.
If you have been their done that before, i am sure you know what to look out for.

Scams happen all the time, however they also happen on the outside and are not limited to prison. Im of the feeling that if an inmate asks you for money and you send it, well, no one twisted your arm to do so. Also, you will notice on the ads on this website there is a question of "seeking donations". If you are only looking for friendship and a correspondance with no gifts or money involved, I would opt to choose inmates that have checked "no" to that question. It does not mean that you wont be solicited for funds at some point in writing, but at least the inmate stated that they were not looking for that from a pen pal.

As for the $150 for photos??? What? Thats crazy. I would not even dignify that with a response.

My cousin is in a minimum and he said $5 for a Polaroid photo. That can only be sent out and Polaroids not sent in. But minimum is always going to be more expensive because the guys can work and make sometimes as much as $300 a month so its relative to their earnings.

Maybe the inmate just left out the decimal point ?

$1.50 ?

I doubt it. Probably something you should second-guess.
