| Exactly Sandy There are formal procedures the inmate can go thru and forms to get approved, and it has to be to direct family, if in another prison. Not ever for a friend though.

| Contrary to popular belief the main reason for inmate to inmate correspondence is to continue criminal activity. I know we like to give our penpals the benefit of the doubt but the truth is it is to continue the illegal activity. There are procedures in place for family to keep in contact with one another. If it is a legit reason the prison officials would allow the correspondence. It is that simple.

| Just as several have said, the prison officials are trying to stifle drug and gang activities. They all pay for the sins of a few. Thus, the rule. Just like Smiley, I have often relayed greetings, well wishes, and news between friends who had been seperated by transfers. But, never did I mention the name of the inmate that this news was coming from, in my letters. If you do this, I would be sure to read the message carefully and make sure that there aren't any detrimental messages, about illegal activities. I would also have to know this pen pal really well, so that I knew their thought process. And, I would never relay messages for someone that I had just met via the mail.

| A grandmother in CA once passed a letter for her grandson. It appeared to be a normal letter. The letter actually contained instructions to take a hit out on another inmate. Some states are getting aggressive with this and can charge the person passing the letter as an accessory to crimes. There was a woman passing letters among inmates here in my state. One of which contained a hit on a rival gang member. When she came to visit she was arrested. I learned about this by a corrections officer. I am not sure the status of her case but it is serious business if you get caught.

| In all the years i have been involved i know many prison partners that help friends stay in contact and gang activity, drugs and criminal activity have NOTHING to do with keeping in touch. A large percentage of the prison population have spent more years behind bars than out, having not only made good friends but have grown up with a lot of others serving time. So just like many of us on the outside want to keep in contact when friends move, so do they. To some these people have become their family. I am not saying what you describe does not take place , because as we know the truth is many do run the show from inside the walls, but from all i understand it is defiantly NOT the MAIN reason for the majority to stay in touch with each other.

| Since many do run a game inside it is not for us to get involved, as the cell phone situation, they do not want to just call home. Prison officials will know who is who, and if the inmate does request he can contact a family member inside prison. It is myth they have no way to contact them and need us. Actually there are many inside it is and was family business related crimes, and want to pass messages to continue on while they are inside.

| Like all others said here, there is a reason why inmate to inmate correspondence isn't allowed usually. And it's a damned good reason. John asked me one time to find a friend in some other facility. But he never asked me to forward a letter for him or whatever. He just asked me to send a birthday card letting his friend know he's thinking of him. That was all. Doing something like this is okay with me and I don't see any danger in it, as long they don't want you to use special words or saying that could hide a message you don't know about. For anything else, I assume it's better to stay out of such business.
