If I want a court to appoint a lawyer for me at government expense, what must I do? What are the basic formalities should I have to complete?

I'm not sure, Addy, I've never been in that position. However, I think that you have to commit a crime first. Then, when you are hauled in, before a judge, they ask if you have an attorney or if you would like one appointed.

Once you ask for a public defender or a court appointed attorney . You wil in many states have to show financial need . A tax from . few months pay statements , or in the US a W - 2 tax information form .

You might spend a few days in county but it beats years in prison.

Some states will have public defenders on call 24 /7 when so when a person wisely asks for attorney in a cop interrogation any questioning by cops is a interrogation in reality if not always "legally" . Never talk to cops with out a attorney present ., It can cost you your freedom or life even if you are 100 % innocent .

In states that do not have public def3nrers on call once you "lawyer up " as they call it the conversation should end you should either be arrested and booked into county or told you are free to go . The cops cannot talk to you again . More than one person has done time because they talked with out a lawyer present

Always ask for a attorney in any encounter with cops or prosecutors . It is your right .

If you were in the UK, you could request a duty solicitor when you showed up at court if you had a Magistrate's hearing. If it was Crown Court, you would need to find your own representation before hand.
