| I agree with the advice already given and really all you can do is write another letter explaining what happened. I guess the letters will arrive, they will ask for the money and if the inmate doesn’t have it, they will be returned or destroyed. I can’t see the penitentiary paying to return them to Ireland though. I would be annoyed with the post office quite honestly. They are supposed to know what to charge people depending on weight, expediency or any other services you purchased. What if those had been time sensitive legal documents? Not good....

| I have never heard of USA collecting for Eire' postage mistake. Once items are hand cancelled they are delivered. (to the best of my knowledge). I have had problems with US postal folks on oversized regular envelopes, but they come back to my address before going overseas. I do agree with advice about sending a postal card about event. I would like to know how USA will reimburse Eire' (Ireland) for the funds! |

| I don’t understand either. It sounds like it was the fault of the post office in Ireland correct? You went in there and they undercharged for your letters going to the states but the employee did not tell you until you returned? It just seems like they expect the US to pick up the bill for their error?? Not going to happen. Are you sure that’s what occurred exactly?

| I have had letters arrive in my mailbox in Australia with all sorts of incorrect postage on them from overseas correspondents. My experience is that receiving post offices never even think to count up the postage costs that the sending postal services should have charged. I think your addressees will get their letters without any problems at all. |

| I'd wait a while and see what happens. I don't think the post offices anywhere check all that closely...especially if they are highly mechanised in the sorting process....the prison mail room doesn't care how much postage is...or is not on the letter. My Pal....when we first started writing ran out of money and stamps so she peeled the stamps I had put on my letters to her and placed them on her's to me. MINE WERE FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY! Machine never noticed! Tom |
