Death Row seems to be it's own "animal". I write to 1 person on Death Row, who has turned out to be a **GEM**. I love him dearly and will stick by him no matter what. We've never even discussed his case, why he's in there, none of that! It doesn't matter, he's got a heart of gold and my commitment to him is 100%.

The Row people need pals but it is quite an undertaking..you get to know their moods, and regardless, once you start writing them you must hang until the end..so many people start writing and then can't take it and just stop. These people on the row probably have very few in their lives-and a lot of time in a cell, so letters do mean a lot..

Also, sad but true, they may be executed whilst you are still contacting them. I know I know, morbid, but it happened to someone I know who was writing someone on DR. Please, please, bear it in mind. I got a letter from a man I write to on DR, he said "I dont want to write much to you today, they executed my friend yesterday". It happens .

It is indeed a 100% commitment. My one guy I write on Death Row in Nevada is an amazing guy. I've not had a letter like yours where he said they executed his friend, but just reading your post grabbed my heart. It makes all my little petty problems and annoyances insignificant. It's impossible to put yourself in their shoes and imagine what they must be feeling. It sure makes me want to focus on what really matters in my life, which is making a difference in THEIR life. I'd like to write to more on Death Row, but 2 I wrote passed me along and 2 others wrote 1 letter back and then I did not hear from them for 6 months. I've wrote more letters, cards, but didn't hear back. I don't want to annoy them if they truly don't want a pen-pal!!
