Default Couple noob questions

Just seen the sight on a tv show today. really got me thinking. for one my uncle is in prison for along time. and just want to say thanks WAP for doing what you do.

I am thinking of taking up a PP but just not to sure how to go about this. Not sure what to say to anyone i write to and such. any help would be highly appreciated.

The idea of making someones day one letter at a time seems very interesting. do you give out your mail or go get a PO box? i just dont know the "rules" of starting this endeavor.

if ya can help please post or email me at Paasche01@yahoo.com thanks ahead of time for any replies.

Paasche

Hello Paasche....interesting name. When I first started writing to prison pals, way back in 1978, I used a post office box at first, mainly due to fear of the unknown. I haven't used one since about 1981. Have had no problems from those I have wrote to over the years. As for picking out someone to write, what I do is first read their profile, then I see if they are close to my age. I tend to get along with those closer in age. I used to pick those that had the longest sentences, but now choose the ones I think wrote a good profile, and the birthdate of course. Follow your instincts. My haven't lead me wrong yet. If something doesn't seem right, then it usually isn't. Don't let your fear of the unknown keep you from finding a really good friend. I've never regretted one moment.......when you write your first letter, just describe yourself, your likes, your dislikes, ask them questions, but be yourself. Those on the inside can tell when someone is Bull
Sh*#$@^& them. They need friends. I know, been behind the bars briefly myself. Just have fun....you'll soon be stalking the mail man like the rest of us do!!! Happy Writing!!!! ~~~Stephanie

Thanks for reply steph.

Nickname is actually a namebrand of airbrush i use for my artwork. plus its a never used nickname for signing up for places.

I do thank you for the comments. i guess the "Unknown" factor is really the factor. not sure if the person i am writing is who they say and such. but i will take your ideas to heart and will really look for certain key things birthday and such. got to start somewhere i guess.

Some states you can go to their web site, put in the inmate # & get info like their prison photo, charges, etc.....but I haven't ever really checked any of mine. I did search for one that stopped writing suddenly. Otherwise, I believe mine. Not all people behind bars are bad. Keep that in mind........I feel like the grandma of writing, been doing it forever, but I do love to write!!!!~~~Stephanie

Hi, I agree with Steph, I kind of happened onto a website and started reading profiles, I just caught my eye, and I felt I had to write to this guy. It has been the most rewarding thing I have ever done, and yes, I also stalk the mail man (poor guy!)

Hi Paasche and welcome to WAP.
Stephie has given you some excelent advice. Like she said, just be yourself. They are interested in every little thing that you know or do. You are their eyes on the world. I hadn't thought of it, but I think she is right about sticking close to your own age. At least that is what has worked for me.
Personally, I like the thought of a PO Box, because you never know who might be looking over a pen pals shoulder. But that is a decision for you to make.
Happy writing. "-)

Welcome welcome welcome!

The only thing I can say is to try and writing a letter that you yourself would like to receive. I think that is the best way to do it.
