Default a ? about a sentence

I'm new to this and not sure about a few things. Some of the pp have listed 2nd degree murder and have a sentence of life. I have noticed that others with the same charge listed 15 years, one I'm thinking said 10 years. Why would some be so long and others just 10 to 15? And sorry for the dumb question, but is 2nd degree where you kill someone and it is not premeditated? Maybe a fight?

Thanks Kkelli for your reply. I was pretty sure that was 2nd degree, the non premeditated. Still a little unsure why some get a set release date and others get life.

There could be another answer as well. There is something called sentencing guidelines that they go by. If you are a repeat offender or have a past record, you may get more time for the same offense than a first time offender would get.

Another reason for the disparities in sentencing that many won't admit or talk about: racism and classism. Sad but true.
