I started to write to PP last summer and now I have 3 "new friends".
If I was really afraid first, now I can say it's a great and very nice experience I have !
It gave me the chance to discover new world, new people, new point of view... And to improve my english (Well, still "work in progress", sorry for my mistakes :) )

In september of 09 It all started in a facebook discussion between some friends and as a joke someone posted a link to write a prisoner. I clicked it out of curiosity. And I looked around at the female prisoners that fitted what i like. and i saw one that was interesting to me. Since write a prisoner has a e-mail function I wrote a quick note and sent it. Never expecting a reply. I wasn't serious about it.

Then to my surprise i get a letter back, at first i thought it was a weird junk mail. I opened it and was very impressed. We have been writing for a few weeks now and we even spoke on the phone.

now its nov 09 - I didn't think anything would come of this but I'm starting to really care about her.

I have recently become fascinated with the criminal justice system, mainly through investigative journalism and crime documentaries. Unfortunately, almost all of the media pertaining to criminal justice is written from either the prosecutions point-of-view or from the victims accounts of events. Rarely have I seen or heard stories that are born from the experience of the accused.

Also, my curiosity to learn more about my own dark-side is an impetus to my search for qualitative data from the prisoners themselves. I live in Florida and I am appalled and disgusted to hear that the Florida Department of Corrections has banned WAP mail to its prisoners. How do we expect the inmates to fit into a society that refuses to communicate with them? This letter-ban is cruel punishment and needs to be repealed.

This is my first time doing anything like this. Besides my curiosity and the apparent lack of prisoner p.o.v.'s, I hope to bring some fresh air, sunshine, and hope to a human being that is suffering from a previous act committed in poor judgement.

My writing PP's has brought so much joy to my life when I needed it more than anyone could ever know.I have became very close with one of my friends/PP's and I really have to say his words keep me going day to day.It's almost like I needed a profile on this website as the one needing correspondance.

I knew WAP this summer, when I was looking for a pen-pal! Starting to write to an inmate isn't easy, but I tried!
Thanks to WAP, I have 2 pen-pals (I only began with 2 letters and had 2 replies), and I can say that one of them is know a special friend. I'm not talking about a love story (we don't even have the same sexual orientation!), but a special friendship :)
I had only 3 letters from the second one, so, I can't say, but he's really intersting and nice :)
I was really surprized, because some letters arrived 3 days after the inmate sent it! I didn't think it would be so fast ^^

I am thinking of writing to a penpal but I have questions first.

You know when you go through the inmates' profiles and you read what they have written and look up their crime etc?? (well I dont know if everyone looks up their crime or not!) well sometimes you look at the earliest release date and its like 09/2010 or something like that. Is it worth still writing to them even though they might be coming out then? or is that like an appeal date. Some inmates have earliest date and then latest release date - I am guessing it means they have to be released by that date or is that again an appeal thing? Please make me understand

Also some profiles are saying I'm looking for that special lady I'm not looking to start a relationship (especially a long distance one!) I'm after a friend is it worth writing to them anyway and state that in the letter?

I dont understand the American Judisal system well, I dont understand the sentencing even though I can figure out the whole Life without parole or with parole thing or the sentencing of 15 - 20 years thing can they ever be released early?

Also what do I say in a first contact letter?
