Default Californians to vote on abolishing death penalty

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California voters will soon get a chance to decide whether to replace the death penalty with life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A measure to abolish capital punishment in California qualified for the November ballot on Monday, Secretary of State Debra Bowen said.

If it passes, the 725 California inmates now on Death Row will have their sentences converted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. It would also make life without parole the harshest penalty prosecutors can seek.

Whoa! I hadn't heard about this! Thanks for posting it. Oregon just laid a moratorium on it that Gary Haugen is trying to thwart for his own execution Gary Haugen's request for new death warrant to be argued in June | OregonLive.com.
This is a very difficult and complex issue for people on all sides, victim's families, inmates, and those who care about them.

The last poll I saw was from the end of last year showing that 48% of voters in California would prefer LWOP over the death penalty.

This is a piece of information over which I should be happy or sad... I can't decide. Death penalty is obviously the most harsh punishment that could be awarded but it ends the life of the prisoner in one go... However, the kind of life these prisoners will have in jails without any possibility of parole and other harsh penalties, can't imagine what life will be like !! Still, my best wishes to all these prisoners and their family.
