Incarcerated and Gay (Part 2)

Posted 02-17-2009 at 05:36 PM by Trimmy
Now let's look at other aspects of simply being an openly gay man in America today. I know the title talks about being gay and in prison but to fully grasp what its like being gay inside these walls we need to also look at our society's views as well. In the past 10-15 years a little bit more acceptance has come but no where near enough. Until a homosexual couple can be looked at the same as a heterosexual couple then what ever acceptance we may have will never be enough. Until I can legally enter into marriage with my partner, Tim or until I can hold his hand or show a little affection by kissing him anywhere in public without people giving us "dirty looks then what ever acceptance there is now will never be enough. Some people will ask, "What is enough acceptance?" When a same-sex couple is able to enjoy all the same rights as a heterosexual copule no matter what state they reside in then we're making our way to full acceptance. When a homosexual can walk down any street in America without fear of homophobic "gay-bashers" beating and torchering them to deat as was the case of Matthew Shepard then were getting somewhere. When we start to look at what society really thinks about homosexuality we see that society doesn't understnad it at all. That's a shame. When HIV/AIDS was first showing its ugly evil head to the word it was assumed to be of homosexual origins. That's totally false! The very first ever report of HIV/AIDS was from a woman in Cap Town, Africa. It was later discovered that she had eaten meat that came from an African Moneky not from sex. People continues to eat "bush meat" (monkey meat) and contracted HIV/AIDS. It wasn't discovered until years later that HIV/AIDS could also be transmitted from human to human. Don't let them fool you.
Now let's take a look at our lovely countrys prison system. Most homosexuals in prison are not treated the same way as hetro inmates are. They are held in segregation often times under bogus pretenses. When we are seen simply talking to another inmate staff assumes our motive is to have sex. If we are assalted by another inmate its always our fault (as was the case with me) and we are always under fire with verbal attacks by staff on a constant basis. Oh, and don't complain! Then it only gets worse. This can all change but how can it change if everyone stands silent? I am only a tiny voice that can't be heard. We all need to write as one voice, one LOUD voice! Don't sit there silent. Stand up and unite. America has the NAACP. We have Homeland Security. Won't you join the fight to bring equality to all? Well what are you waiting for?

I dont know where to start my response to this. I am 100% for gay rights, it frustrates me to my core that they are not treated equally. My cousin is a lesbian and she has been with the same girl for a long time and my whole family loves her it is just so upsetting that they dont have the right to get married. I think people are ridiculous to think that gay marriage is like a slap in the face of marriage, when alot of them have been divorced, like thats not! I have known alot of people a real lot of people who have been to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight for the freedom and rights of Americans! I have seen they come home crazy and also someone who didnt come home at all and the sadest part of that is that they are fighting for something that their own people (other americans) are fighting against! Equality! Freedom! American way of life! Last I knew marriage was a right not a privledge, the consisitution states all men are created equal....How could our nation in 2009 have laws that contradicted one of the laws that made this nation great over 100 years ago!?!? Sorry this wasnt really about prison but I have a lot of passion for some things and gay rights is one of them!

May I ask, What is it that , as a whole, we can do to help?

this kind of treatment just totally blows my mind. There is no reason for this kind of treatment. Please, let me know if there is any thing we can do to help.

I have been writing gay inmates for almost 25 years ( May 1984) and I understand much is wrong. The best I have been able to do is to offer honest friendship, lots of male mail, sometime some help. In the archaic state of Texas nothing will change in my life time, yet I feel I have made a difference. Like you that is how I found my life mate. I wish you both a long and happy life.
