Hi guys, has anyone any knowledge, or experience of setting up and running a trust fund to help an inmate with his court cases? I live in the UK, and would be so grateful for any advice. Nette x

Do you mean you are looking to set up an account for donations, or the inmates own personal monies that you manage specific to his legal funding? What country are you looking to set the account up in?

Hi Smiley, he has asked me to manage a trust fund (if that is the correct word) to start a re-sentencing fund for him. I am totally out of my depth here and feeling a little bit more than scared as I don't know what I am getting in to. He wants me to set it up and manage it from Northern Ireland where I live. Nette x

I had read that asking for donations to cover a legal costs of an on going court case is illegal in the US, and those funds could be seized. I would make sure its legal first. If it is I would talk to a US bank about setting up an account in the US, it shouldn't be hard, and you then can set up a paypal account to have people deposit funds into that account. You can withdraw those funds by writing and mailing what would a be a US check or money order that bank would sell you. You could have the money order made out in the lawyers name for instance to pay his/her fees.

Thank you JoshA that is food for thought. I will see if I can find out more details from my friend and definately don't want to find myself in hot water by doing something illegal. I hadn't even thought about that.
