I've been writing to my Prison Pen Pal for just over a year now and I talk to his mom every day on Facebook. Thank you for those of you that gave me advice and made it possible for me to receive calls from him. We talk most evenings and he is very much like his mum, caring, honest, thoughtful and kind. A little while back he added me to his visitation list, I had to fill in some forms here in the Uk and send them back to his Prison in America. I got approved both him and his mom would like to me to come visit.

I just want a little bit of advice and am happy to take in peoples opinions on this. I am a confident person and am alright travelling alone, I am thinking of visiting this year, October to be exact. I'm really excited about seeing him for the first time and we have been really good friends to one another, I am also planning on staying with his mom for the week that I am there. I am trusting my instinct in that I am doing the right thing. Of course not all of my friends agree and think I', crazy. Of course I have to be weary but I am 25 years of age and entitled to make my own mistakes. I really want to do this so much, I have come this far to make a difference in his life why not take one more step?

I would really appreciate peoples thoughts

    I'd also say go for it, but make sure your family/friends back home know where you're going to be staying etc and can contact you whilst you're away. I'm sure you'll be fine travelling alone, and that you'll have a good time with your PP and with his Mum (and how nice that you can stay with her whilst you're there) but better safe than sorry! No need to be obsessively safe though! :-D

    I can kind of understand why some of your friends think you're mad for wanting to go though. I can imagine how my Mum would react if I decided to do what you want to do, but she'd get over it and I know she'd be happy for me when I went and had a good time! She was worried about me when I went to Utah (I live in the UK) to visit an old school friend, and she'd met her (and she wasn't in prison!). Some people just worry about stuff like that :-) I'm sure you'll have a great time though! :-)

    I lost my mum a few years back but I know she would say it's your life, get and do it!! I am definitely going for it, I have nothing to lose and everything to gain! I am allowed to make three visits to him while over there which is amazing My pen pals mum wants to take me out and show me a bit of where they live, they are not far from Chicago and I'd quite like to visit there I will leave all my details with family and call them most days!! Thank you Laura for your opinion, much appreciated! Thanks Rosa I will do! Im going to book it about September time so I will update as soon as I make it final xx

    You obviously think things through and have looked at this from all angles to ensure your safely - that is all you can do in this world. Once you have done that and keep your safety in the back of your mind, you will be fine ;-) for some reason you reached out a year ago and now you are willing to take this step. All things happen for a reason and it seems to be you HAVE to go ;-) I hope it turns out to be a great experience and if you come back thinking "what was I thinking! ..." you will be a smarter girl regardless.
