Default Re: "The Long Walk" - thoughts/feelings on visits

I had a visit with my husband last weekend. Pretty much everything in the original post was the same for me, except I dont drive.

This was the 8th time I had been in 4 1/2 years. It's a 10,000 mile round-trip so I can only do it every 6-8 months. At least we dont have to visit through glass; I know I could not handle that now and so does he. Our first visit was through glass as we weren't married then, but neither of us want to go back to that.

The time goes by so slowly right up to the point where you are sitting in the visitation room, and then all of a sudden 4 hours have passed and you have to leave again. We get 2 x 4hr visits over a Saturday and Sunday. Usually Saturday we spend talking about family business and friends. Sundays are quieter, we spend a bit of time just soaking up being together. But it is such an artificial situatuation, to have to cram in so many words and thoughts into just 8 hours. We cant walk around, he is not allowed to go to the vending machines with me so I have to guess what he might want to eat (though he eats pretty much anything). We have to sit opposite each other across a table that is just too wide to be comfortable when you're holding hands. I can only hug and kiss him for a brief minute at the start and end of the visit.

But I would travel twice as far for half the time if I had to.
