Are We Super Predators Or Misunderstood Secretary Clinton has been confronted with comments she made in the 1990’s describing African Americans as super predators. She has since apologized. I still don’t understand why she apologized. True enough super predator is a harsh term however my actions from ages 13-17 fits Secretary Clinton’s terminology. Secretary Clinton’s choice of words shouldn’t be the problem. The problem is her failure to place herself in our shoes. I’m not trying to deny the Secretary or anyone else for that matter the right to judge us as they see us. I only want to challenge society to look at the world through our eyes in hopes that society will feel that same hopelessness and realize our actions are only a reflection of that hopelessness. Imagine being the second oldest child of a single mother. Imagine going to bed cold and hungry; now imagine your siblings going to bed cold and hungry. Imagine living without water, gas and electricity. Imagine 6 children sharing 2 packs of Ramen noodles. Imagine watching Repo men repossess everything you thought you owned, breaking your mother down to the point of tears because no matter how hard she works, she knows it’ll never be enough. Your goal in life becomes to ensure she never sheds another tear. Imagine a life of drugs, money, murder, ending with jail if you’re lucky or death, accepting those terms because even though you still feel hopeless, you no longer feel helpless. At 13 I felt that was worth dying for…Imagine! Andrew Anderson

Love and Acceptance over Fear, Hate The genocide inflicted on the natives; slavery; Jim Crow; women’s suffrage movement; civil rights; represent America’s history and it’s a stronger nation for it. Not because of forgiveness; apologizing; forgetting but by accepting. Accepting the fact that our past is our past but acknowledging that in order for us to make progress it has to be left in the past. Proof of our progress is after electing the first black President, we now have the first woman to be the nominee for a major party. When an unarmed black man is killed, we see white protestors on the front line, yelling black lives matter. America is a land of immigrants so why ostracize Hispanics for coming to make a better life? The first pilgrims came to the new world seeking religious freedoms so how can we ban an entire religion from entering and talk of surveiling the Muslims who are here? How can we judge the LGBT community when it’s obvious we don’t understand them? What we do know is as humans they’re entitled to our love and respect. The country has a sad history of mass shootings; which I believe are a direct result of self-hate, which derives from not being accepted and feeling less than. We’ll never eradicate mass shootings because there are too many guns, however if we learn to accept each other for who we are it’ll go a long way. Blacks, white, Hispanics, Muslims, Christians, Jews, straight, LGBT’s all want the same thing: life, love, freedom, security and the pursuit of happiness…and to simply be accepted.
