DOING HARD TIME

Doing Hard Time…that’s a phrase that gets misconstrued way too often. Many people consider it to mean being in prison. What if I told you that was completely false…you’d probably call me a liar or ignorant, right? Believe it or not this is easy, we get free food (well the question of whether it’s actually food or not is still up for debate), free boarding and even free cable. Yea, we’re confronted with bad officers that aren’t fit to work here and our free will is practically non-existent, it even gets dangerous from time to time, but doesn’t the outside world face these same struggles day in and day out? What about the people out there struggling to get by, working 2 or 3 jobs just to be 2 months behind in rent, yet they still find it possible to drive 6 hours to be able to visit us or accept a collect call that is overpriced, yet so worth it. They still find the time to write a letter to let us know they love us. How do you all do it? You give when there’s nothing to give, you love when everyone else gives up. I know at times it appears that we don’t understand your struggles or appreciate you because you do everything you can, but we do, we truly do! You’re the ones that give us hope; that enable us to strive to be better. So from the bottom of my heart I want to thank all of you – the grandparents, parents, siblings, spouses, friends, all of you doing real time, for the love and support you offer when everyone else has given up. We love you all…unconditionally, as you’ve loved us! Jesse

LOVE VS. HATE

In a world full of hate do we have the capabilities to love anymore?? I mean the world is so different and people are equally peculiar. Let’s look at the things that are easy to distinguish, we’ve got sex, race/skin color, and people with so-called abnormalities. Wait! There’s more…Less subtle differences like religion, sexual preferences, political views and personality traits. These are the walls that separate us, the walls that promote hate and exclusion, one and the same as the very wall that “someone’s” propaganda has mentally constructed with promises to physically build between Mexico and the U.S. Or even the proverbial wall “people” put up to block incoming Syrian refugees, the women and children that literally have no place to go, no place to call home. This is what our world has come to, we don’t understand so we hate and we hate because we don’t understand. Instead of acceptance and knowledge we have ignorance and exclusion. Let’s try focusing on our similarities rather than our differences. For instance – the simple fact that we’re all DIFFERENT! Get over it, it’s not gonna change, besides acceptance is the answer for a better world. To further these disgusting views of abhorrence is not only unacceptable but there’s not anything good that can come from it…Promote love and renounce Hate!

Taken For Granted As living beings we journey through life taking everything for granted. However, once the “luxuries” are gone and we’re left to our ingenuity and passions to keep us company, we look back on what’s missing. Most times these thoughts that pervade our hearts and souls aren’t the typical memories that you’d expect, but it’s the simplest things that at one point in time we wouldn’t even have thought twice about. For instance, one of those simple delights that haunt my heart, in excess, is nature. I vividly remember that “get me up” in the morning, that fresh cup of coffee outside with nothing but the swaying trees, vibrant flowers, scampering squirrels and the sweet songs of the birds performed for my undeserving ears. It is this taste of our harmonious world that I wish for one more day, one more second, just one more moment and I promise this time it won’t be taken for granted. If I’m able to convey anything with this thought, it would be that everything matters, even the little things that we take for granted day in and day out. Something as small as a smile or kind words from a stranger are not thought about and whether you believe it or not, it is these little things that we forget to appreciate, that makes this world a better place. So smile more, enjoy life and take nothing for granted!
