SOME OF MY FAVORITE PASSAGES

Ecclesiastes 9:10, 9:11 Whatever your hands find to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, or device, or knowledge, or wisdom in the grave where you are going. I returned and saw under the sun that – the race is not to the swift, not the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.

PRISON YARD CONTEMPLATION

I was sitting on the ground against the fence on the prison yard, gazing into the late evening sky. I could just faintly see a commercial jetliner flying across the horizon. At first the jet seemed to move slow but ever so steadily and consistently in it’s moving that it actually rapidly streaked across the sky. I thought of the people flying so high in the jetliner, oblivious to a prison so low and a prisoner observing them make their way across the sky. I wondered about refreshments. Could someone be having a martini? I contemplated the passengers, their lives and destinations. People living their lives; people who would never know me and whom I would never know. But, as the jetliner left my sight, I wished them all so well in their life journeys.

HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS ARE PARAMOUNT

I recently read a book entitled West of Kabul, East of New York, an Afghan American story by Tamin Ansary. I enjoyed the book. I was struck by something said on pages 206 and 207, which I feel is profoundly true, but in a busy world, easy to overlook. “That human relationships are the only things that are utterly irreplaceable. A human relationship, when it’s gone, it’s finished. And anything you might feel sorry for, there is not correcting it. And anything you planned to do together, that’s finished too. There is no replacing a relationship.” And, “My irreplaceable loved ones gave my life whatever value it had”. I agree with these passages. I feel life is so very short. Family and friendship are paramount. Love, friendship and acts of kindness are the most significant things that can be effected. ~Brian Duckett 10-31-10
