Somewhere along the way, on this journey we call life, I slipped and fell through the cracks of society and ended up on Texas Death Row. This turning point in my life took me deep into the heart of America’s most active killing machine. Year after year, I would witness horrors of this dreadful place but I never once contemplated giving up on life. Each day, blessed to me, was another day I took advantage of and treasured. This optimistic outlook toward life unexpectedly prepared the foundation for my future.
In 2005, the Supreme Court would ban juvenile execution, which commuted the death sentence of juveniles across the nation. With my life spared I realized a greater authority than mans had deemed my life’s purpose unfulfilled. The transition off Texas Death Row into prison general population would begin another chapter in my life.
Now after nearly two decades of incarceration in one of America’s harshest prison systems time still has not succeeded at imprisoning my mind and strong spirit. Yet, time has a tendency to creep up at the most unexpected moments and I can’t help but feel the heightened sense of being alone. It’s times like these I know having someone (a friend to write to) can ease the feelings of loneliness. But who am I?
Hello! My name is Son Tran. I am of Vietnamese descent. I possess a positive attitude and outlook toward life and I know how to laugh and smile easily. I do not have time to sit around and mope in a state of depression. Some of my passions are learning martial arts, its principles and how I can apply the teachings to my life. I enjoy training and exercising with a variety of health methods particularly Tai Chi. I am also an avid reader of books ranging from self-help to historical fiction. I have a great capacity to learn new things and I’m constantly challenging myself.
I am willing to correspond with people within the States and abroad. I seek the opportunity to reach out beyond these walls to meet new people, make new friends and to learn more about other’s cultures, heritages, and customs. This opportunity will give us the chance to share with one another our experiences, goals and dreams.
Should you be reading these words and feel the slightest urge to write – then, do so! I would love to hear from you and forge our friendship today. In friendship, the possibilities are endless.
